Initial Startup and Break-in Procedure
Startup
- Run the engine at 1500-2000 RPM for approximately 15 minutes
- Verify and monitor oil pressure immediately after startup
- Thoroughly check for any leaks or noises and shut the engine down to address the issues
- Monitor the engine temperature as it warms up, do not let it overheat
- Adjust the total advance and ignition timing to manufacturers recommendations
- Make sure cooling system is working properly
Break-in
- Monitor all gauges and warning lights
- Check all fluid levels daily
- Avoid extended idling, vary speeds for the first 100-200 miles of driving, and do not do any heavy towing for the first 500 miles.
- Change oil at 250-500 miles, then every 3000 miles or 3 months after.
- On flat tappet cams, use conventional oil with a zinc additive for at least the first 500 miles. For high performance applications it is recommended to continue using zinc additives. Synthetic oil can be used after the initial break-in period.
