Small Block Ford Block Style

There are two options available for the block on your small block Ford crate engine:

  • •With clutch pivot on block [Most manual transmissions before 1974]

We're dedicated to building your dream engine, and building it right the first time. If your engine builder doesn't ask these questions they risk sending you an engine that you'll have to swap parts on, usually at your expense! Small block Ford Oil Pan Style

For proper fitment we offer 3 oil pan options on our small block Ford crate engines:

  • Front sump oil pan (fits most Mustangs 1965-1973, other car apps to 1976, some truck applications to 1979)
    • The standard front sump pan does not have provision for a dipstick. If you select a factory reverse flow timing cover, you will need to select the Moroso front sump oil pan below.
  • Moroso front sump oil pan (has side kickouts and provision for a dipstick)
  • Rear sump (fox body style) oil pan

Small block Ford Timing Cover Style

To ensure proper fitment of your water pump and pulleys we need to know what timing cover to install on your crate engine. There are 3 options for timing covers:

  • Standard flow - This is by far the most common option. On this we also need to know which side your water pump inlet is on; drivers or passengers side.
  • Reverse flow, 1987-1997 truck style serpentine belt
  • Reverse flow, 1994-1995 Mustang style serpentine belt

NOTE:: The only timing cover with provision for a mechanical fuel pump is the standard flow cover. If you choose a reverse flow cover you will need to use an electric fuel pump.

If using an aftermarket serpentine belt system call the manufacturer and ask them which timing cover you should be using.

Standard flow timing cover
(For all V-belt pulley systems and most aftermarket serpentine belt systems)

Notice the direction of the ports for the water pump. On these timing covers we also need to know what side the inlet for your water pump is on (ref. Image 2), which allows us to install the timing pointer on the correct side so it is visible.

Reverse flow timing cover
(For most traditional serpentine belts in the years listed)
