FEATURED ENGINE: 5.4L FORD TRITON W/ 3 VALVES PER CYLINDER
The Ford 'Triton' engine made its debut in 1997 and was offered in many pick up, van and SUV applications. The Triton family of engines included the 4.6L and 5.4L V8 engines, as well as the 6.8L V10 engine. This featured version of the Triton was released in 2004, is the 5.4L size and features 3 valves per cylinder for a total of 24 valves. These engines use Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to attempt to improve performance, fuel economy and/or emissions.
Tri Star remanufactured 5.4L 3v engines are built to meet or exceed OEM standards and our backed by our standard 3 year, unlimited mileage nationwide warranty (private use applications). For total peace of mind you can also upgrade to our 'No Fault' Warranty Supplement, call for details. All Tri Star remanufactured engines incorporate the latest updates to correct original design flaws - Click here for the product bulletin outlining the updates of Tri Star remanufactured 5.4L engines. Tri Star engines are remanufactured, not rebuilt, for the most reliable and durable engines available. Tri Star remanufactured 5.4L Triton engines are completely remanufactured including machining the block, crank, connecting rods and cylinder heads, and assembled with new or remanufactured parts. Rebuilt 5.4L Ford 3 valve Triton engines will only correct the issue with the "core" engine used as raw material, but will typically not include any other machining or remanufacturing on the rest of the engine or have any updates performed. Used engines incorporate no updates and are extremely susceptible to failure due to mileage already being on the engine with questionable maintenance records. Used and rebuilt 5.4L Triton engines are inferior, do not correct any of the original equipment design flaws and typically have very limited or pro-rated warranties. When shopping be sure to ask if you're getting a used, rebuilt 5.4L Triton engine or a 100% remanufactured 5.4L engine.

The 5.4L 3 valve Triton engine is notoriously known for valvetrain noise (rattling or ticking), noises under acceleration from the cam phasers and/or timing components, spark plug failure and issues with low oil pressure. Tri Star remanufactured 5.4L engines address these most common failure points in the remanufacturing process to provide the most durable and dependable engines.
COMMON ISSUE: | TRI STAR SOLUTION: |
Valvetrain noise, low oil pressure, VVT codes | •New O.E. VVT actuators (cam gears) installed. These are extremely crucial to the 5.4L 3v engine but some competitors reuse cam gears or replace them with inferior aftermarket alternatives. •Cam journals are machined and engine is assembled with cam bearings for tighter clearances. •Updated high flow oil pump from Melling. •VVT solenoid housing screens replaced 100%. •VVT solenoid housing checked for straightness. |
Leaking timing cover and/or oil pan | •Tri Star includes the timing cover and oil pan installed on this engine. Timing covers are checked and machined for straightness to ensure a good seal. All engines are simulation tested and black light checked for leaks during testing. |
Spark plug thread issues | •All spark plug threads are 100% inspected. Any threads that are damaged are replaced with TIME-SERT® inserts, the OE approved method. |
Premature bearing failure or engine knocking | •Blocks and cranks are completely remanufactured to exact tolerances utilizing CNC machining equipment •Crankshafts are micro-polished to extend bearing life. Unlike some competitors, the tape used for micro-polishing cranks at Tri Star is only used once and in only one direction. Reusing tape back and forth can cause fine metal particles to become impregnated in the journal and cause premature failure. •Tri Star 5.4L long blocks include the oil pan and pickup tube installed to avoid contamination issues. Some competitors offer the engine without the pickup tube installed which risks it being exposed to dirt/debris that will plug the pickup screen. |
Head gasket failures or leaking head gaskets | •Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets are used which resist heat and avoid head gasket failures. •Compression height on the pistons is reduced to maintain factory compression ratio specifications. •Both the block and cylinder heads are precision machined to exact specifications. |
